HOPE MEANS NEVADA ANNOUNCES SEPTEMBER INITIATIVES FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH

The list of Suicide Prevention Month initiatives follows.

Safe Messaging on Suicide (Clark County)
Date: Wednesday, Sept. 2
Time: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Location: Rainbow Library at 3150 N Buffalo Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89128
Description: The Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention is pleased to provide improved education regarding Safe Messaging on Suicide. Studies and research have concluded the way we talk about suicide can have long-lasting impacts on someone with lived experience with suicide. It is crucial for communities to use consistent language to frame discussing or reporting on suicide. This will help prevent future suicides and to destigmatize the conversations surrounding suicide prevention. This three-hour training will cover facts and myths about suicide; suicide-safe language and suicide-safe imaging; person-first language and the contagion factor; how to safely report on suicide (TEMPOS); and the importance of the messenger and postvention. World Suicide Prevention Day Landmark Lightings
Date: Thursday, Sept. 10
Locations: “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” Sign, High Roller Observation Wheel, Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas, large digital displays on the Las Vegas Strip courtesy of Spotlight Outdoor Ads, Mandalay Bay’s hotel towers, Rio Las Vegas’ hotel towers,  Goldfield, Nevada’s courthouse, Washoe County Coroner’s Office and Mallory Behavioral Health Center in Carson City. Other municipalities across the state are planning to participate as well.
Description: In honor of World Suicide Prevention Day, iconic landmarks across Nevada will glow in turquoise and purple to raise awareness of suicide prevention.

Suicide Prevention 101 Training Program (Clark County)
Date: Wednesday, Sept. 16
Time: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Location: Rainbow Library at 3150 N Buffalo Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89128
Description: The Suicide Prevention 101 Training Program focuses on four specific populations: lifespan (general), youth, elderly and Native American. The program can be used in special training environments such as law enforcement and foster care agencies. The objectives of this training are to increase one’s knowledge and understanding of suicide, recognize warning signs, identify risk and protective factors and increase willingness and ability to intervene with a person at risk for suicide. Internet and Social Media’s Influence on Suicide (Clark County)
Date: Wednesday, Sept. 16
Time: 1:30 to 4 p.m.
Location: Rainbow Library at 3150 N Buffalo Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89128
Description: Attendees are invited to examine the evolution of the internet and its relationship to increased suicides. Participants will learn how to recognize someone who might not have a healthy balance between human contact and online activities, know how to respond to someone who may be isolating themselves and resources for family or parents to intervene. Your Association, Your Voice: Meet NVMHCA (Virtual)
Date: Wednesday, Sept. 16
Time: Noon to 1 p.m.

Description: Join the Nevada Mental Health Counselors Association (NVMHCA) for a relaxed virtual meet-and-greet designed to introduce the association and connect with Nevada’s mental health counseling community. Learn more about NVMHCA’s mission, membership opportunities, upcoming initiatives, professional development and advocacy efforts, while discovering how the association supports counselors, students, emerging professionals, group practices and others working to strengthen mental health care across Nevada. Youth Suicide Prevention 101 Hosted by Hope Means Nevada (Virtual)

Description: This class focuses on the youth populations for suicide prevention. The program can be used in special training environments such as law enforcement and foster care agencies. The objectives of this training are to increase one’s knowledge and understanding of suicide, recognize invitations for help and protective factors. safe TALK Suicide Alertness Training (Clark County)
Date: Tuesday, Sept. 22
Time: 12 to 3:30 p.m.
Location: Mesquite Library at 160 W First N St. Mesquite, NV
Description: LivingWorks safeTALK is a face-to-face workshop featuring powerful presentations, audiovisuals and skills practice. Attendees will learn how to prevent suicide by recognizing signs, engaging someone and connecting them with an intervention resource for further support.
